German youth will excavate the site of the ancient settlement Manhup-Kale in the Crimea. The German-Ukrainian archaeological expedition targeting former Goth settlements began at the end of July. The international historic and linguistic camp “Manhup,” in which the German youth is taking part, is being held for the third time. This year ten German students interested in the history of the Germanic tribe came to the Crimea. The tribe settled in the Crimea at the beginning of the 4th-5th centuries, Deutsche Welle reports. All of participants are amateurs in archeology but they will work together with professional explorers, the students of the Vernadsky Tavriisky National University. The head of the All-Ukrainian Union of German Youth Volodymyr Leisle said, “We will excavate not only the settlements of the ostrogoths, but also explore Karaims, the layers of the Byzantine times. We will see how the cultures interlaced. Through such an ancient history people can understand the variety of cultures and that we need to search for dialog and co-exist together in the best way possible.” Young archaeologists will live in tents and will communicate only in German. The Ukrainian students will have an opportunity to practice a foreign language. The German youth is bringing sun batteries to Manhup in order to teach their Ukrainian colleagues about using alternative types of energy. The archaeological expedition will last for 12 days. The Ukrainian government assigned 20,000 hryvnias to it. Afterwards the students will prepare a booklet with detailed accounts of their findings and impressions.
