August 6 through 26, the exhibit World Press Photo’10 is going to operate in the Lavra Art Gallery. It will present this year’s best 200 photos in such categories as Spot News, Contemporary Issues, Daily Life, People in the News, Portraits, Sports Action, Arts and Entertainment, Nature etc. This was reported by the Soviart Center of Contemporary Art.
The exhibit is to present photos made by 62 winners from 22 countries, who cooperate with world’s largest periodicals and news agencies: the New York Times, Associated Press, Le Monde, France Press, Xinhua News Agency, Hangzhou, Reuters, Contrasto, Life etc. On the whole, over the last year the contest jury has considered over 101,000 photos portraying humankind’s life.
It will be reminded that the photo contest has been held for 53 years already, and is shown in over 20 countries around the world. Last year, Ukraine also joined the list of countries where model photos of reporters are exhibited. In 2009, 24 photographs made by Ukrainian photo journalists took part in the competition. Photographer Hlib Haranych won the third prize. Stepan Rudyk was also nominated for the second prize, but due to a violation of technical standards, he was disqualified. In 2010, the number of Ukrainian participants in the contest rose to 32 photographers.
The organizers have promised to include a rich creative program in the framework of the exhibit, and Den/The Day specifically will also be taking part. We will present our International Photo Contest, The Day’s Photo Exhibit (this fall it will be held for the 12th time), as well as The Best Photos catalog.
The framework of the creative program will also include a day of the Photographer journal, a presentation of Viktor Marushchenko’s Photo School and the photography journal 5.6, the launch of the international photo festival Kyivfotokom, to be held in Kyiv in October-November 2010, and master classes of Ukrainian photographers and participants of the World Press Photo 2010.
Viktor Khamatov, head of the Soviart Center of Contemporary art and organizer of the World Press Photo Exhibit in Ukraine, considers that this event not only shows the highest level of the world’s photo journalism, but also promotes Ukrainian photography.
This is a top-rate exhibit in the world of professional photo journalism. Indisputably, the mere fact of its launch gives a special status to the country, whose capital becomes its host. At the same time, the best world photo samples it presents are wonderful examples to study by both professionals, and amateur photographers of the country. Other things aside, World Press Photo is also a window to the world, as its photos capture the brightest and most symbolical moments of the life of mankind, which is due to the fact that the competitors are the world’s best 62 photographers who follow the most interesting and important events. Thus, humankind is shown before your very eyes.
The exhibit World Press Photo will be open Aug. 6-26, every day, 12 a.m. till 8 p.m, in the Lavra Gallery (Kyiv, vul. Mazepy, 17). The admission fee is 20 hryvnias. Admission is free for pensioners and children below the age of 12.
