On Oct. 19, 2009, The Day handed over to two bookstores — Ye and one run by Kyiv Mohyla Academy — the tenth edition in the The Day’s Library Series: two volumes under the title Extract 150. According to the bookstore staff, within just a few days after the two-volume edition found its place on the shelves the customers’ interest to the edition has become obvious. Nadia Pavliuk, director of the Kyiv Mohyla Academy bookstore, says that they are going to organize meetings at which students will discuss Extract 150 with The Day’s regular contributor Volodymyr Panchenko, professor of the Kyiv Mohyla University.
“I think that the demand for this edition will depend primarily on the level of students’ awareness and, second, on the way it will be presented to them by their teachers — not administratively, but through piquing their interest. I am convinced that Extract 150 contains serious materials not only for journalism majors but also for future historians, political analysts, culture experts and philologists. I think that the success is guaranteed,” says Volodymyr PANCHENKO, sharing his predictions.
“In my opinion, Extract 150 is a true encyclopedia of historic, epic materials, which have been presented by The Day throughout its existence. Every text in the book is lively, timely, and dynamic,” emphasizes Nadia PAVLIUK. “Today everybody has an opportunity to be in touch with many authors of The Day due to this two-volume edition. Extract 150 contains something deep and fundamental. The Day sparked interest in historical journalistic investigations. It is a powerful cultural and educational project. In these two books there are materials worth being immediately multiplied and handed out to people in the streets. They will make the readers think about where they are heading to and what they are losing.”
“The books of The Day’s Library series are always in high demand. And they are purchased by very different people: there isn’t a single criterion,” told us Serhii DIACHUK, consultant with Ye bookstore. “I think that the books of The Day’s Library Series are a must for every educated family. The Day is accomplishing a very noble cultural, historical, and educational mission. Now an increasing amount of literature devoted to the issues of history, culture, and politics is published. However, The Day, led by Larysa Ivshyna, was the pioneer.
“In the early 1990s I personally felt discouraged by Ukraine’s prospects of having any quality, deep, analytical journalism. The Day became the foundation of hopes for the better future and an opportunity of choice. Of course, such projects need to be supported on the national level with organized target purchasing of such books for the libraries. The Day may be called, without any exaggeration, one of the best editions, which has incorporated the best journalists and researchers. The books of The Day have intrinsic quality, while Extract 150 is a collection of truly the best and most significant material — good food for thought. The Day’s Library is a response to that lonesome voice in the wilderness.”
