Sept. 23 1919: A joint session of the Directory and the governments of the Ukrainian National Republic and the Western Ukrainian National Republic resolves to commence immediate hostilities against Denikin’s army.
1989: The first issue of Slovo, the organ of the Taras Shevchenko Ukrainian Language Society, is published.
Sept. 24 1993: A treaty setting up the Economic Union of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) is signed in Moscow. Ukraine declares it will cooperate as an associate member.
1997: The Verkhovna Rada passes the bill “On Elections of People’s Deputies” based on a mixed electoral system.
Sept. 25 1986: The Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR confers the title of “Hero of the Soviet Union” on the Chornobyl liquidators Viktor Kybenko and Volodymyr Pravyk (both posthumously), as well as on Leonid Teliatnykov, for their bravery, heroism, and selfless actions following the accident at the Chornobyl Nuclear Station.
2004: Kyiv marks the 70th anniversary of its reinstated status as the capital city of Ukraine.
Sept. 26 1995: A resolution on Ukraine’s membership is adopted during a session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
2001: President Leonid Kuchma of Ukraine visits Kazakhstan and signs a number of intergovernmental agreements.
Sept. 27 1906: The first issue of Ukraine’s daily newspaper Rada comes off the presses in Kyiv.
1993: The President of Ukraine signs an edict setting up the Coordinating Committee on Market Reforms and Measures to Overcome the Economic Crisis.
Sept. 28 1939: The Soviet Union and Germany sign a friendship and border treaty in Moscow, whereby the western borders of the Ukrainian SSR are established along the Southern Buh and Narev rivers.
Sept. 29 1920: After a lengthy period of fighting, Nestor Makhno agrees to a truce with the Soviet government.
