A 2,000-year-old children’s toy in the shape of a clay bird has been found by a group of student archaeologists from the Faculty of History at Lviv’s Ivan Franko National University, led by Roman Berest, a professor of archaeology. The discovery was made during a dig in the vicinity of Hanachivka, a village in Peremyshliany raion, Lviv oblast.

The expedition was triggered by local businessmen’s plans to construct a cascade of ponds. Bulldozers had already cut into the upper layer of soil, and soon after the students found a large settlement of the Lypytsia culture dating to 2-3 BC. Among the students’ finds are numerous ceramic pieces (the area was known as a major pottery center), metal tools, fibulas, necklaces of glass beads, and the clay toy bird.
