May 17, 1935. A special meeting of the People’s Commissariat of Internal Affairs of USSR approved a decision to sentence Yury Kotsiubynsky to five years of exile to West Siberia for participation in a “counter-revolutionary Trotskyite organization.”
1991. The founding meeting of the Ukrainian Association of the Democratic Press was held.
May 18, 1942. Presidium of the USSR Supreme Council passed a decision On Conferring Commanders of Ukrainian Partisan Detachments Sydor Kovpak, Oleksandr Saburov, and Oleksiy Fedoriv the rank of Heroes of the Soviet Union.
1944 . The deportation of the Crimean Tatars from the Crimea began.
May 19, 1861. The first Ukrainian Sunday school was opened in Sumy.
1945. The Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR, Council of People’s Commissars of the Ukrainian SSR, and Central Committee of the KP(b)U adopted an Address to the Members of Ukrainian Bourgeois Nationalists Bands calling upon them to surrender.
May 20, 1934. An International Congress of Teachers was held in Kyiv.
1961. The Council of Ministers of Ukrainian SSR approved a decision On Creating the Annual Taras Shevchenko Prize for Outstanding Works in Literature, the Fine Arts, Music, Theater, and Cinematography.
May 21, 1918. At the First Ukrainian Trade Unions Conference the All-Ukrainian Council of Trade Unions was founded.
1921. The Council of People’s Commissars passed a decision On Fighting Illiteracy and created an All-Ukrainian Commission headed by Hryhory Petrovsky.
May 22, 1861. Taras Shevchenko was reburied at the Chornecha Hill near Kaniv.
1954. The Presidium of the Supreme Council of USSR passed an order On Awarding Ukrainian SSR and Its Capital, Kyiv, the Order of Lenin.
May 23, 1917. The Central Rada approved the First Universal proclaiming Ukraine’s sovereignty and autonomy.
1918. Negotiations began between the Ukrainian State and Russia.
