The third day of the Paralympic Games that kicked off last Saturday in Athens was a big success for Ukrainian participants, with Ukraine’s team capturing five gold medals, two silvers, and one bronze. Now the Ukrainian team’s tally comes to fifteen medals, including six gold medals, three silvers, and six bronzes. The athletes who became Paralympics-2004 champions last Monday are Dmytro Alekseyev (swimming), Lidiya Solovyova (powerlifting), Oleksandr Doroshenko (athletics, shot put), Oleksandr Mashchenko (swimming, pictured), and Andriy Komar (fencing, foil). Lidiya Solovyova’s score in powerlifting deserves special praise, reports champion.com.ua. Participating in the under-40 kg category, this Ukrainian woman not only won the Paralympics but also set a personal world record. This score is also 15 kg higher than the previous record set by an able-bodied athlete. The team from China is leading after three days of competition with 31 medals (15-11-5), followed by Paralympic athletes from UK (9-6-7), and Australia (7-9-9).
