This July Kyiv to Host Brazilian Carnival

25 March, 2003 - 00:00

Last Wednesday Director of the Central Administration for Foreign Economic Contacts and Investment at the Kyiv City Administration Mykhailo Pozhyvanov announced that a carnival in honor of Brazil has been scheduled. The agreement was reached with Brazil’s Minister of Culture Gilbert Gil during Mr. Pozhyvanov’s visit to Salvador (Brazil) and with Brazil’s Ambassador to Ukraine Luis Rodriguez Marces, reports ForUm. “Of course, Salvador is not Rio de Janeiro, but the carnival I watched there was very colorful,” Mr. Pozhyvanov said, adding that “The Brazilians have recently held their carnival in Lisbon, Portugal, and now we are sending them letters trying to persuade them not to take the equipment back yet, since it’s easier to get it to Ukraine from Portugal.” Simultaneously, he noted that the Brazilians laid down two conditions for holding the carnival. “First, they want it to become not a onetime but annual event, and they want exclusive rights to organize it for at least ten years. Second, they want a license for street vending during these two days. This will allow them to attract investors and earn some money.”
