Opposition Forms New Plans

8 October, 2002 - 00:00

Last Tuesday, the opposition announced the date for its next political protests. According to the leaders of the Socialist Party, the Communist Party, and the Yuliya Tymoshenko Bloc, they will take place on Saturday October 12. According to the Communist Party Leader Petro Symonenko, the political will of the masses will now be directed towards an “All-Ukrainian people’s tribunal”, where citizens of Ukraine will “stand as witnesses” in the process of charging the authorities. Moreover, the leader of the eponymously named Yuliya Timoshenko Bloc promised to invite professional lawyers to the tribunal. Symonenko in turn assured journalists that the accusatory process would take place observing “all of the norms of Ukrainian legislation,” and that representatives of the President would even be invited to clarify the position of Leonid Kuchma. Ms. Tymoshenko also announced plans to form an ‘action headquarters’ in every educational institution in the country. Speaking of the opposition’s actions in parliament, Ms. Tymoshenko announced that the opposition deputies would attend the session chamber and continue to demand the consideration of the political situation in the country. The leader of the Socialist Party Oleksandr Moroz declared his disagreement with the opinion of political analysts and journalists who recently expressed in the media that the Rise Up, Ukraine! actions had abated. The actions were only unfolding, insisted the Socialist leader. We will not judge how right or wrong Mr. Moroz may be. However, it should not be overlooked that in relation to the ownership of political technology, the domestic opposition is unquestionably growing stronger.
