November 13: 1708. Russian troops headed by Aleksandr Menshikov captured the town of Baturyn, the hetman’s capital, putting the fortress’s defenders and inhabitants to the sword.

1918. A secret meeting of the Ukrainian National Union in Kyiv elected the Dyrektoriya with Volodymyr Vynnychenko as its head.

November 14: 1939. The Supreme Council of the Ukrainian SSR passed the law On the Reunification of Western Ukraine and the URSR.

1944. The State Museum of Ukrainian Art was opened in Kyiv.

November 15: 1919. The UNR State Council with the participation of Dyrektoriya members and the UNR government gave the “supreme command over the republic” to the Supreme Otaman Symon Petliura.

1945. The Ukrainian Free Academy of Sciences was founded in Augsburg, Germany.

November 16: 1991. The First All-Ukrainian International Congress was held in Odesa.

1994. Verkhovna Rada approved the law On Ukraine’s Joining the July 1, 1968 Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

November 17: 1920. Petr Wrangel’s army was defeated in the Crimea and the Southern Front liquidated.

1993. The Ministry of Justice of Ukraine registered the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists.

November 18: 1935. The Warsaw trial began of twelve members of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists with Stepan Bandera, Mykola Lebid, and Karpynets sentenced to death.

1993. Verkhovna Rada ratified the treaty on the reduction in START- 1 strategic offensive weapons.

November 19: 1942. Soviet troops began their offensive operation near Stalingrad.

1989. Human rights defenders Vasyl Stus, Yury Lytvyn, and Oleksa Tykhy, who died in Soviet death camps, were reburied in Kyiv.
