Ukraine has joined the global antiterrorist coalition and confirms its readiness to spare no effort in the common fight against terrorism, Ukraine’s permanent UN representative Valery KUCHYNSKY told the plenary session of the UN General Assembly on October 1. The session, dedicated to combating international terrorism, was attended by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Speaking for Ukraine, Ambassador Kuchynsky offered to pronounce September 11 the Day of Combating International Terrorism. He also announced Ukraine’s initiative to call a UN Security Council session of foreign ministers and create an international antiterrorist body to coordinate the efforts of the world community. The Ukrainian diplomat stressed the necessity of preventing terrorist organizations from obtaining weapons of mass destruction, chemical and biological in particular, as well as state-of-the-art technologies. He expressed hope that measures to fight computer terrorism will by duly reflected in international legal documents to be drafted by the UN.
