Where there is no law, but every man does what is right in his own eyes, there is the least of real liberty

Nadiya Starovoitova’s Tour de Force

19 June, 2001 - 00:00

Griffin Gallery offers Nadiya Starovoitova’s one-woman show. Although she specializes in fashion design, this time the emphasis is on easel graphics.

Her prints are quite unusual. The artist consciously retains the link with her first profession. In fact, she tries to put fashion design and its laws to the best use in her new creative space. And so her drawings are always fashion designer’s dreams — rather, dreams of an artist and designer, for every print is not a scene from a fashion show, but a scene from a theatrical performance. Her heroines do not just walk, they dance, sometimes even fly about. And this is what makes the difference.

In general, Nadiya Starovoitova’s favorite characters are charming woman butterflies on a lasting flight, now and then freezing in midair, assuming sophisticated and a bit affected postures, mostly to demonstrate their luxuriously exotic attire. In this sense, the artist’s fantasy is really inexhaustible. In addition, Nadiya STAROVOITOVA creates interesting graphic variations on the theme of the Ukrainian national costume. The result is a series of works that have been successfully exhibited in many countries.
