April 26: 1986. An accident occurred in block four of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
1996. The President of Ukraine ordered the Chornobyl Center for the Problems of Nuclear Safety, Radioactive Wastes and Radio-Ecology be set up.
April 27: 1919. The Poltava Museum of Art was opened.
1995. Verkhovna Rada instituted Ukraine’s first state award, the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky.
April 28: 1887. Ukraine’s and Russia’s first monopoly, a sugar-making syndicate, was founded at the Congress of South Russian Sugar Producers.
1947. Poland launched the Wisla operation, deportation of the Ukrainian population from eastern to western and northwestern areas of the country.
April 29: 1918. The Black Sea Fleet hoisted the Ukrainian flag.
1992. The national soccer team of Ukraine played its first match, and since then, this day has been observed in Ukraine as Soccer Day.
April 30: 1954. The monument to Mykola Shchors was unveiled in Kyiv.
1990. The Ukrainian Helsinki Union began its congress, which founded the Ukrainian Republican Party.
May 1: 1890. The Day of International Proletarian Solidarity was celebrated in Lviv for the first time in Ukraine.
1915. In Vienna, the Supreme Ukrainian Council was reorganized into the General Ukrainian Council which was to represent all national political forces working for independence of Ukraine.
