1944. General of the Army Nikolai Vatutin, commander of the First Ukrainian Front, was seriously wounded in a firefight with an ambushed Ukrainian Insurgent Army unit.
March 1: 1914. Pilot Petro Nesterov took the maiden flight from Kyiv to Odesa.
1918. The Central Rada passed a law on the monetary unit (the hryvnia) and issuing banknotes (2, 5, 10, 20, 100, 500, 1000 hryvnia denominations).
March 2: 1993. According to a decree of the President of Ukraine the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine was founded.
1994. Ukraine and Japan signed their first ever framework agreement On Cooperation in Eliminating Nuclear Weapons in Ukraine.
March 3: 1917. The Society of Ukrainian Progressives organized the Ukrainian Central Rada in Kyiv, including representatives of major Ukrainian political parties.
1945. The oblast state picture gallery was unveiled in Lviv.
March 4: 1918. The Little Rada passed the law on registering UNR citizenship.
1990. The first ever democratic elections to Soviets (councils) at all levels were held in Ukraine.
March 5: 1939. Kyiv University was renamed after Taras Shevchenko.
1992. Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine passed the law on the representatives of the President of Ukraine.
March 6: 1919. The Third All-Ukrainian Congress of Soviets opened in Kyiv, adopting the first Constitution of the Ukrainian SSR.
1939. A monument to Taras Shevchenko was erected in Kyiv.
