Compared to 1990, the sheep population in Ukraine has dropped 5.6 times. UNIAN reports that there were 8.5 million head in 1990 and early in 1998 the number was 1.5 million (900,000 in the public and 583,000 in the private sector). This, in turn, caused a 4.5-fold decline in the output of wool. Agribusiness Ministry experts report 6,600 ton of wool in 1997, at Hr 2.86 procurement price per kilo of pure wool, with Hr 11-12 par value. Wool-processing enterprises have ceased buying wool for lack of funds.
