1919: A referendum in Khust [Western Ukraine] calls for the unification of Transcarpathia (Zakarpattia) and the Ukrainian National republic.

1919: Ukraine’s Provisional Workers and Peasants’ Government adopts a decree which places all educational establishments under the jurisdiction of the Education Directorate.

1920: The Council of People’s Commissars (Sovnarkom) of the RSFSR and the All-Ukrainian Executive Council adopt a decree establishing the Ukrainian Soviet Workers’ Army.

1920: The Sloboda Ukraine Museum opens in Kharkiv (currently known as Kharkiv Historical Museum).

1934: The capital city status is officially transferred from Kharkiv to Kyiv.

1976: Western periodicals, in particular The Financial Times and The New York Times, hit Soviet newsstands for the first time.

1990: A human chain is formed between Kyiv and Lviv, known as the Ukrainian Wave, in commemoration of The Day of Ukrainian Unity.
