Ukraine remembers Anna Politkovskaya (Mazepa)

Rallies in the memory of the late Russian journalist took place worldwide

On October 7 various events in memory of the journalist Anna Politkovskaya took place all over the world. She was murdered in her apartment building on Lesnaya Street in Moscow on October 7, 2006. Many people in Ukraine remember her and know about her contribution to the development of democracy in the countries of the former Soviet Union. Many believe that the traits of Politkovskaya’s character could be shaped by Ukrainian roots.

It is characteristic that the media controlled by the Russian government ignored the event, focusing on Vladimir Putin’s 60th anniversary.

Meanwhile, the situation with Anna Politkovskaya receives a lot of attention from the US State Department, spokesperson Victoria Nuland said on October 7 that the United States will continue to draw attention to the murder of Politkovskaya, until the justice will prevail and all the perpetrators will be punished. A special statement on the anniversary of Politkovskaya’s death was made by the International Committee to Protect Journalists.

It is a very gratifying fact that in Russia there are many people who remember the journalist and regularly organize rallies on The Day she died. Hundreds of people participated in a rally in memory of Anna Politkovskaya, timed to the sixth anniversary of the journalist’s death in Saint Petersburg. The rally at the Solovetsky Stone on Trinity Square was organized by the association “Democratic Petersburg.” From October 2 through October 5 before the sixth anniversary of Politkovskaya’s death solo pickets took place in the city on the Neva River. Rally participants suggested to the Petersburg authorities to name one of the streets in honor of the columnist of Novaya Gazeta, giving as a reason the fact that Politkovskaya made a great contribution to the development of democracy and civil society in Russia.
