1940: Chernivtsi and Akerman oblasts are formed as part of the Ukrainian SSR, with Akerman to be officially renamed Izmail oblast, December 7, 1940.

1941: The State Defense Committee of the USSR resolves to evacuate major Soviet enterprises from Right-Bank Ukraine.

1966: Dnipro Hydropower Station [Dniprohes] starts generating.

1968: In London, a rally in front of the Soviet embassy ends up hurling stones, as a sign of protest against Moscow’s suppression of Ukrainian poets and writers.

1977: Mykolaiv Shipyard launches the Soviet Union’s first gas-turbine horizontal-load Kapitan Smirnov.

2009: President Viktor Yushchenko of Ukraine adopts an annual national NATO membership preparations program for the current year.
