TIME, one of the oldest and most influential publications in the US and the world, presented 100 best photos (in an unranked order) selected by the editors. Among them are four photographs from Donbas. TIME named the passing year the Year of migrants and refugee crisis in Europe, when thousands of people from Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan among many other peoples have left their homes. “They left behind wars, poverty, and persecution in hope of a better life on European banks. Painful images from Greece, Italy, Macedonia, Croatia, and France were not the only ones to convey despair people faced in the face of danger. The Rohingya in Southeast Asia were forced to drift in Thai waters in search of the country that could save them,” says the publication.
The article added that in the US the year was marked by the #BlackLivesMatter movement, the nuclear agreement with Iran, the tragic shooting at Emanuel Church in Charleston, South Carolina, and the early start of the 2016 presidential campaign.
Despite the fact that most of the photos, including the ones of Donbas, are tragic, the publication notes that the year had its amazing moments that were also documented by photographers, “such as a stunning photo of the ISS crew that returned to Earth, or the first clear picture of Pluto – the planet that had looked blurry both in the literal and in the scientific sense for 85 years.”
