Den constantly monitors the social development of Kharkiv. And today, we will make a new step to expand the dialog at the invitation of its citizens. Den’s Photo Exhibition visited Kharkiv for the first time quite far back in time, in 2001. Hosted in the city’s art museum, it was a success. The year 2007 saw the first visit of Larysa Ivshyna to the Karazin Kharkiv National University (KhNU) with a photo exhibition and Den’s Library book series. In 2013, Den held a roundtable in the city, where community activists discussed how to make their efforts more productive and effective. Past year, meanwhile, the National Law University supported our initiative to celebrate Yaroslav the Wise’s heritage by holding a number of events for its students.
Just as Kharkivites of 2007, in particular photographer Volodymyr Ohloblin (who, incidentally, was a winner of one of our photo exhibitions), said that “Den’s exhibitions provide a background picture of life in Ukraine over the past few years and today,” the city’s residents expect to see now photographic reflections on 2015 and a photographic forecast for this year. “I am overjoyed to see Den’s Photo Exhibition open in Kharkiv and am waiting for it with hope and impatience,” we heard from Liudmyla Dolia, coordinator of the Kharkiv Press Club. “I like Den/The Day and consider it a worthy national-level publication, a media outlet which is significant and unique in its segment. I enthusiastically follow the publication’s projects which are whole worlds in themselves, and Ukraine Incognita is a favorite one for me. Your newspaper develops intelligence of its readers, nourishes their mind, and leads them on instead of serving people’s baser needs, as most of the media do. Den gives cause for reflection.”
Den’s Days in the city will be held at the invitation and with assistance of the Kharkiv Oblast State Administration, the KhNU, and the Yaroslav the Wise National Law University. The exhibition of 170 best photos submitted to the International Photo Contest Den-2015 will open at the Yermilov Center for Contemporary Art of the KhNU (4 Svobody Square) at 4 p.m. on January 29.
Meanwhile, January 28 will see Den’s political affairs editor Ivan Kapsamun and political correspondent Valentyn Torba (both doubled as authors and compilers of two bestselling books from Den’s 2015 journalistic triptych) taking part in roundtable “Journalism and Information Wars,” co-organized by several departments of the KhNU and the local branch of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine.
Furthermore, Den offers all active Kharkivites its own topic for a thorough discussion. After the opening of the exhibition, we will hold discussion “Recent History: A Rethink. Practical Tips from Den’s Journalists,” which will start at the Yermilov Center at 5 p.m. on January 29. Kapsamun and Torba will present the already mentioned journalistic triptych published by Den, which includes “The Trap,” or A Case without a Statute of Limitations; I, an Eyewitness. Notes from the Occupied Luhansk and Catastrophe and Triumph. The Stories of Ukrainian Heroes. These three books offer a key to understanding the ongoing Ukrainian catastrophe that unlocks the hidden contemporary history reasons for the war flaming in the east of our country. It being a frontline city, Kharkiv will find these themes especially important.
“I think that it is precisely Den/The Day that Kharkiv needs now, because this newspaper has a patriotic Ukrainian outlook,” said Lidia Starodubtseva, head of the department of media communications at the KhNU. “We have a lot of people who need to read this publication. Just looking at Facebook, one can see many Kharkivites posting to groups with the eloquent names like the Kharkiv Junta, the Euromaidan Kharkiv, the Ukrainian Kharkiv, which shows that the city has a large and strong patriotic core, and these people make up this newspaper’s target readership. I hope that Den’s Days will become a significant event for the city.”
After the capital and Mykolaiv, Kharkiv will be the third city to see Photo Exhibition Den-2015. Therefore, we call on Kharkivites to not miss the opportunity to attend these important events!
The photo exhibition will be held at the KhNU’s Yermilov Center for Contemporary Art (4 Svobody Square) from January 29 till February 12. Entrance will be free. As usual, all visitors will be eligible to vote for the best photo.
