A total of 635 cars with environment-friendly engines, which Japan transferred to Ukraine under the terms of the Kyoto Protocol on May 25, will be sent to regional police departments.

Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Hroisman stressed that equipping the police with environment-friendly Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV cars was yet another step taken to provide technical support to the new Ukrainian police. “Our goal is to make every citizen of Ukraine feel completely safe. To achieve it, we need your endurance, your exceptional service and, of course, quality support for our law-enforcement system. I want each of you to enjoy enormous respect of Ukrainian citizens and to be able to provide timely assistance to those who need it,” stressed Hroisman.

Minister of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov emphasized that the day’s event was not the first project launched with support of the Government of Japan and Ambassador Shigeki Sumi. “I want to publicly thank president of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation Osamu Masuko, who in response to my request, and taking into account the specific conditions of our police’s development, granted a 13 percent discount on the purchase of these cars. Very soon, another 95 cars will enter operational service with the National Police,” stressed the minister and urged partners not to stop, because there were many projects to come.

In turn, Chief of the National Police of Ukraine Serhii Kniaziev emphasized: “These 635 cars will start patrolling by the end of this week. They will help us protect public order in all parts of our country,” Kniaziev emphasized. He also said that availability of these vehicles obliged the National Police to hire 2,700 new police officers by year-end, train them and enroll them into service in the context of the patrol and traffic police program, which was announced earlier.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Ukraine Shigeki Sumi used the ceremony to stress once again that Japan supported Ukrainian reforms and helped in their implementation. “I am glad that after the Toyota Prius cars which we provided under the terms of the Kyoto Protocol, we are able to provide these energy-saving cars as well,” Sumi emphasized.
