The New York Times reported (October 2, 2017) at least 50 killed and over 200 wounded after a gunman firing from the 32nd floor of Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay Hotel “rained a rapid-fire barrage on a huge outdoor concert festival.” The shooting took place at 22:30 local time and later the police reported that the perpetrator had been terminated. As a result, McCarran Airport in Las Vegas had to divert some flights destined for the airport because of police activity. Pop singer Jason Aldean, who was performing when the shooting began, later said: “Tonight has been beyond horrific… My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved tonight. It hurts my heart that this would happen to anyone who was just coming out to enjoy what should have been a fun night.” According to the BBC, Nevada’s gun control legislation is markedly lenient, allowing citizens to carry firearms without registering. Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman tweeted: “Pray for Las Vegas.” NYT says it was “one of the deadliest mass shootings in United States history.”
