1861: The first issue of the Ukrainian-language monthly sociopolitical and literary journal Osnova comes off the presses in St. Petersburg.

1901: A total of 183 Kyiv University students are expelled and drafted into the Russian Army in retaliation for their revolutionary persuasions.

1918: The Central Rada of Ukraine adopts the Fourth “Universal” Declaration that proclaims an independent Ukrainian National Republic.

1944: Troops of the First and Second Ukrainian [Kremlin-commanded] Fronts launch the Korsun-Shevchenkivsk offensive that ends on February 17, 1944.

1958: The Soviet [Council] of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR resolves to establish the Ukrainian Correspondence Polytechnic Institute.

1993: The Ministry of Justice of Ukraine registers the Congress of Ukrainian Nationalists as a political party.

1996: In Vilnius the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the Sejm of Lithuania sign a cooperation memorandum.
