1918: The Directorate leads an uprising against Hetman Pavlo Skoropadsky.

1919: The State Council of the Ukrainian National Republic, including members of the Directory and the government of the UNR, appoints Chief Otaman Symon Petliura to the “supreme command of the republic” [president].

1939: Kyiv hosts the Third Emergency Session of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrai­nian SSR that passes a bill annexing Western Ukraine to the Ukrainian SSR.

1945: The Ukrainian Free Academy of Sciences is founded in West Germany.

1946: The Soviet [Council] of Ministers of the USSR adopts a decree introducing new Ukrainian spelling rules.

1988: The Soviet space shuttle Buran is launched to orbit on an unmanned mission, for the first and last time, circling the Earth twice and landing in automatic mode.

2004: Ukraine’s First National Channel broadcasts a public debate between the key presidential candidates, Viktor Yushchenko and Viktor Yanukovych.
