1783: The Black Sea Fleet’s first battleship Slava Ekateriny [Glory to Catherine] is launched at the Kherson Shipyard.

1885: Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute starts functioning as Ukraine’s first higher educational establishment in the field.

1906: The first issue of Ukraine’s daily newspaper Visti comes off the presses in Kyiv.

1955: Ukrainian samizdat produces the first document condemning the Soviet regime, “An Open Letter to the UN from Mordovia Camp Inmates.”

1977: Ukraine’s first nuclear power station at Chornobyl starts generating and is added to the USSR’s energy network.

1993: President Leonid Kravchuk of Ukraine signs an edict establishing the Coordinating Committee for Market Reforms and against Economic Crisis in Ukraine.

1993: The ASEAN adopts Asia’s first charter on human rights.

1997: President Leonid Kuchma of Ukraine ends his official visit to Mexico after signing a number of bilateral agreements.
