Last weekend the Zoodim pet supermarket located on the Osokorky housing estate in Kyiv held its latest action called “Find Yourself a Friend.” Almost every weekend the organizers, volunteers of the Hostomel animal shelter, give away puppies and kittens to Kyiv residents and display photos of other inmates of the animal shelter. If you like some of the photographed animals, you can visit the shelter. The only requirement for becoming the owner of an animal is “to have good hands” and sign a contract with a mandatory clause that obliges the owner to maintain the pet in good conditions. New owners must also sterilize the animal within a year and, should any problems arise, return it to the shelter instead of throwing onto the street. The workers at the shelter usually manage to find homes for more than 10 kittens and puppies at a time and up to 30 animals are adopted from the shelter every month. Still, the number of stray animals is far greater. Today the shelter houses about 600 dogs and cats.
