Amazon is one of the world’s largest trade companies, which has branches in the US, Japan, Germany, Australia, Brazil, India, the UK, China, and the Netherlands. This service was one of the first to suggest that the world purchase consumer goods via the internet. In this way, the company launched in July 1994 by the US entrepreneur Jeff Bezos has in fact “upset the boundaries” of everyday life.
Ukrainians can now buy goods on the Amazon website through intermediaries, aggregator companies, or order delivery at the German company DHL. This is why our compatriots come across problems in payment and are also unable to receive the goods in good time and at reasonable prices.
Ukrposhta Director General Ihor SMILIANSKYI said in a 5th Channel program that his company was working to bring Amazon to Ukraine. In his words, Ukrposhta will be able to speed up handling the goods bought at Amazon if it makes a deal with USPS, an independent operator of the US federal government. This will make delivery essentially cheaper than in the case of private players and will shorten the time of mail customs clearance. He noted that his enterprise is prepared logistically but there are several important preconditions. As USPS is a “very big monopolist that moves not so fast,” Smiliansky could not foresee when Ukrposhta would conclude a contract with it. He emphasized that Ukrposhta had entered into negotiations with the American mail operator in order to establish direct channels.
In an official commentary to The Day, Ukrposhta’s press service said it was actively establishing new direct logistical contacts with foreign e-commerce players and mail logistics operators. They stress that “it is a very important task to draw the attention of Amazon to Ukraine” but say they cannot reveal details as long as negotiations are in progress.
