Where there is no law, but every man does what is right in his own eyes, there is the least of real liberty

Meritorious Eyes

19 December, 2000 - 00:00

The conference hall of Ukraine House (Ukrayinsky dim) became a kind of room of mental relaxation, hosting the Native Land Through the Eyes of Realist Artists Exhibition. The collection boasts several dozen landscapes created by 19 patriarchs of Ukrainian art, among them Tetiana Yablonska, Serhiy Hryhoryev, Heorhy Cherniavsky, Mykyta Popenko, Volodymyr Masyk, and many other mastodons of the Soviet postwar epoch. Their art is even, without any special creative breakthroughs but showing indisputable quality. Once again one is presented the image of blossoming Ukraine. A good image, found in countless Soviet school textbooks and kitchen calendars. Yet the originals, collected in one place, leave one with truly unforgettable impressions against the background of today’s creative upsurge in Kyiv.
