The Culture-and-Art Center of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy recently hosted the 3rd tournament of the intellectual game Go for the Cup of the Ambassador of Japan to Ukraine, Mr. Honda Hitoshi. The Japanese Embassy has traditionally promoted this beautiful and informative game in Ukraine. Enthusiasts from Kharkiv, Odesa, Rivne, Kostopil, Dnipropetrovsk, Simferopol, and Kryvy Rih came to watch the tournament. There were 138 players in all, among them Cheng Jui, a Chinese student at the Polytechnic Institute. South Korean Ambassador Shung Shin was guest of honor. The tournament was won by sixth dan Kyiv resident Dmytro Bohatsky. He was presented the Japanese Ambassador’s Cup and valuable presents from the embassy and the tournament sponsor, the Obolon Company. Valuable presents were also given to Mykhailo Halchenko of Kyiv (fifth dan), Kostiantyn Lopatenko of Dnipropetrovsk (third dan), Mykhailo Kozlov of Rivne (first dan), Mykhailo Kovaliov of Kharkiv (forth dan), Dmytro Yatsenko of Kyiv (fifth dan). In addition to six prize-winners of the main tournament, all winning four or five games received sponsor trophies. Among the women Yelyzaveta Horbunova of Kyiv proved the strongest. Six prizes went to players of the children’s tournament, among them the youngest yet very promising contestant, five year old Sofiyka Shevchuk of Rivne.
