Moonlight by Barry Jenkins, a three-act story of an Afro-American gay who has to struggle for survival in a hostile environment, was pronounced the best drama at the 74th Golden Globe Awards ceremony.
The actor Casey Affleck won in the nomination “Best Performance in a Motion Picture – Drama” for playing the main role in Manchester by the Sea.
Predictably, Isabelle Huppert, who played in the black comedy Elle (“She”) directed by the living classic Paul Verhoeven, received the best actress prize. Elle was also named the best foreign language film.
The best supporting actress and actor awards went to Viola Davis (drama Fences) and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Nocturnal Animals, the festival’s sensation, a thriller by the cult director and designer Tom Ford, which also won the Grand Prix at the past year’s Venice festival), respectively. Zootopia won the best animated feature film award, while the legendary Meryl Streep was selected as recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award. In her speech of thanks, Streep hinted several times at the US President-Elect Donald Trump’s attempts to humiliate people, The New York Times reports.
What became a true sensation of this year’s Golden Globe ceremony was undoubtedly La La Land a jazz musical by the 32-year-old Damien Chazelle, very well known to audiences for the musical psychological drama Whiplash (2014). La La Land won awards in seven categories: Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy (for Ryan Gosling), Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy (for Emma Stone), thus setting an absolute record in the history of Golden Globe Awards.
The Crown (UK-US) was selected as Best Television Drama Series. This serial’s actress Claire Foy won the Best Actress in a Television Drama Series award, while Billy Bob Thornton received the Best Actor in a Television Drama Series award (Goliath), and Tracee Ellis Ross was selected as Best Actress in a Television Comedy Series (Black-ish). The six-episode Night Manager (UK-US) garnered three awards: Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film (Tom Hiddleston), Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries or Television Film (Hugh Laurie, well known as Doctor House), and Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Miniseries or Television Film (Olivia Colman). The first season of The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story won in the nominations Best Miniseries or Television Film and Best Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film (Sarah Paulson). Atlanta received two Globes: Best Comedy Series and Best Actor in a Comedy Series (Donald Glover).
The Golden Globe Awards have been bestowed since 1944 on the basis of a vote by about a hundred of journalists affiliated with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. It is the world’s second most prestigious prize after Oscar.
