The Les Kurbas Theater opened the new season with the last premiere of the last season, the play Lisova Pisnia by Lesia Ukrainka, created with the assistance of Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation for Development of Ukraine. This play directed by the Kyivan Andrii Prykhodko differs by the harmony of all its components and smart droplets of the authentic Hutsuls’ festive costumes and clear sounds of the Ukrainian songs selected by the singer Mariana Sadovska…

“What is significant for the Les Kurbas Theater in this season is that we are going to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its founding,” director of the theater Oleksii KRAVCHUK told The Day. “Of course, we are going to prepare some gifts for the audience. In particular, the project called Away from Zarathustra. The philosophical concept of the project is by Friedrich Nietzsche, the text is by Kliem, stage direction is by the creative director of our theater Volodymyr Kuchynsky, music is by Mariana Sadovska and visualization is by Oleksii Khoroshko. The project provides for creating several plays. It is funded, as well as Lisova Pisnia by Rinat Akhmetov’s Foundation. We were also helped a lot by Dmytro Firtash who gave us a certificate for half a million hryvnias. We used this money to partially repair the theater, buy some light and video equipment and also to appoint dressing rooms properly.”

Are you preparing any premieres?

“The play called A Rehearsal at the Theater of Crime by Jacques Mauclair staged by the pupil of our creative director Volodymyr Kuchynsky, Mykola Bereza.”

How are you doing now, are you planning any events to celebrate your 25th anniversary? By the way, are you going to the protest actions?

“We are in tune for working. And we are! As for any special festive events, now we are not planning any. We think that the best present for the theater’s anniversary would be the salary for our actors in the academy. We have been negotiating about it for six years and there is not any progress at all! Lviv is a theater capital of Ukraine, but as for our funding, it is much worse as compared to other Ukrainian theatres. As for protests… There might be some if the funding of the Les Kurbas Theater does not change. We have to remind the politicians about ourselves. But do they have time for us? And for the art in general? The election is at hand…”
