Last Wednesday, Ukrainian border guards detained thirty-six persons, including eighteen Chechens, in three separate groups attempting to cross the border illegally. According to the press service of the State Border Guards of Ukraine, the group that looked most suspicious included three men and one woman. These people were traveling under the guise of tourists on false passports on the St. Petersburg-Lviv train. Two other groups were detained in Zakarpattia. Of the ten persons in the first group six were children. The second group included two children and an adult couple. That same day some of the Chechens detained on Ukraine’s western border were deported to Russia escorted by border guards. Moreover, fifteen citizens of Russia (nationals of Chechnya) detained in Zakarpattia on September 4 and 8 were escorted by border guards on a train to Kharkiv to be further deported to Russia. Three nationals of Georgia detained on September 7 at the checkpoint outside Uzhhorod were escorted on the same train to Lviv.
