November 20, 2017. Windsor. Buckingham Palace released a new official photo of the royal couple on the occasion of the 70th (or platinum) anniversary of the wedding of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. Reuters writes that the glittering wedding ceremony of 21-year-old Princess Elizabeth and 26-year-old Prince Philip Mountbatten, which took place just two years after the end of the Second World War, was aimed to “raise the nation’s spirits” amid post-war shortages. Elizabeth and Philip decided to celebrate their 70 years of married life with a private party at Windsor Castle. However, the UK will still mark the occasion on a grand scale, as church bells will peal for more than three hours to mark the royal anniversary. Queen Elizabeth is the first British monarch to celebrate a platinum wedding.
