The Bicycle Day was celebrated in Volyn’s capital city on May 26, and while the event itself has become a local tradition, its details were quite unusual this year, as it was centered on a mass costumed bicycle race. The race’s participants had both to argue authenticity of their historical costumes and adapt them to the modern bicycle. Bringing certain costume accessories to the event was encouraged, too, including bows, swords, muskets, baskets, musical instruments, working tools, etc. The participants included knights with beautiful ladies, princes and princesses, musicians, Cossacks and simple peasants from past eras.
Cycling popularity has been increasing in Lutsk and Volyn in general by the year lately, promoted by the newly-founded Cycling Development Association. It has been found out that a lot of famous Volynians enjoy spending their holidays with the two-wheeled friend.
“It is great that healthy lifestyle promotion benefits most from promoting cycling,” the First Deputy Mayor of Lutsk Sviatoslav Kravchuk maintains. “We see how cyclists’ columns are lengthening several times over with every new Bicycle Day, but most importantly, we have enthusiastic leadership who organize this activity. Chairman of the Cycling Development Association Yurii Moklytsia is a true leader, and it takes such leaders to force local authorities to take up their case, too. The city council’s executive committee will consider the issue of establishing bicycle parking facilities at malls. Of course, we are still suffering from bicycle parking facilities shortage, and bicycle lanes have been long in coming, but they do appear gradually, becoming a good alternative way to spend leisure hours for citizens of Lutsk.”
