A musical fountain named Thumbelina was unveiled on June 1, International Children’s Day, next to the Kyiv Puppet Theater at 1a Hrushevsky Street. The bronze heroine of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale sits in the center of a 10-meter-wide fountain on six stained-glass petals surrounded by multicolored jets of water. You can only see the color of the jets in the evening and at night, but the fountain will function around the clock from late spring to the first frosts.

The principle of a musical fountain calls for varying water compositions simultaneously with sound changes. The Kyiv City Administration purchased the fountain equipment and some waterworks items in Italy. According to Vitaliy Yudin, chief architect of the Puppet Theater, the fountain’s water jets reach as high as five or six meters.

The city plans to erect statues of Pinocchio and Pierrot near the fountain soon. The fountain was built by Ukrrestavratsiya. The Culture, Art and Heritage Directorate of the Kyiv City Administration told The Day that it invited children from underprivileged families and pupils from esthetic education schools to view the opening of the fountain. After the official part ended, they were invited to the Puppet Theater to see Andersen’s Thumbelina.
