28 October, 2010 - 00:00

The board of directors of the League of Historical Cities decided to accept the city of Chernivtsi to its midst during a meeting in the Japanese city of Nara, reported Ukrinform. “The League of Historical Cities welcomes Chernivtsi as a new member city. I hope Chernivtsi will be an active member of the League and participant of our events. We wish your city prosperity,” reads the official letter from the President of the League of Historical Cities, Mayor of Kyoto Daisaku Kadokawa, to the Mayor of Chernivtsi Mykola Fedoruk. The latter also received an official invitation to participate in the 13th Conference of Historical Cities, which will take place in Vietnam. The press center of the City Council reports that Chernivtsi applied to join the international organization in March this year, looking for the establishment of permanent and comprehensive ties with the world’s historic cities, creation of conditions for the development of Chernivtsi, and attempting to follow the world’s best practice in preserving the historical heritage of the city. The World League of Historical Cities (WLHC) was founded in 1994. Its headquarters are located in Kyoto (Japan). The organization counts over 70 member cities in over 50 countries, which are rich in historical, architectural and cultural attractions. Athens, Brussels, Budapest, Jerusalem, Paris, and Riga are among the League’s members. Ukraine is represented by Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, Lutsk, and, from October 2010, Chernivtsi.
