1783: Kherson Shipyard launches the battleship Slava Yekateriny [Glory to Catherine of Russia].

1885: The South Russian Institute of Technology, Ukraine’s first higher technical school, starts functioning in Kharkiv.

1906: The first issue of Ukraine’s daily newspaper Rada comes off the presses in Kyiv.

1912: Sportyvne pole [Athlete’s Field] Stadium is launched in Kyiv.

1955: Date of Ukraine’s first samizdat document entitled “An Open Letter to the UN,” written by Ukrainian political prisoners in Mordovia camps.

1977: Ukraine’s first nuclear power plant in Chornobyl starts generating as part of the Soviet Union’s power supply system.

1993: President Leonid Kravchuk of Ukraine signs an edict establishing the Coordinating Committee for Market Reforms and against Economic Crisis in Ukraine.

2009: FILA Wrestling World Championships are held at the Messecenter Herning exhibition center in Herning, Denmark. Ukrainian athletes win 5 bronze medals.
