1216: Honorius III gives papal sanction to the Dominican Order, founded by a Spanish monk in 1215, subsequently known as Saint Dominic.

1920: The Eighth All-Russia Congress of Soviets convenes and adopts the GOELRO [transliteration of the Russian abbreviation for “State Commission for Electrification of Russia”] plan.

1941: An anti-Nazi resistance group starts operating in Malyn, Ukraine.

1968: Apollo 8, the first manned mission to the moon, is launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Crew members fail to reach the moon but nevertheless become the first humans to leave the Earth’s gravitational pull.

2004: Kyiv’s Maidan Independence Square hosts a massive rally under the slogan “Yes To Fair Elections!”, with tens of thousands taking part, thus marking the one-month anniversary of the Orange Revolution.
