1775: On orders from Catherine II, Russian troops destroy Zaporozhian (Pidpilna) Sich.
1834: St. Volodymyr University (currently: Taras Shevchenko National University) opens in Kyiv.
1918: The first issue of the weekly Komunist, organ of the Organizing Bureau of the First Congress of Bolshevik Organizations of Ukraine (currently: Demokratychna Ukraina) comes off the presses.
1922: An international financial conference begins in the Hague, attended by 27 countries, including Soviet Russia.
1930: Construction of the complex of workshops of the Rostselmash Works, the USSR’s largest one specializing in agricultural machinery, is completed.
1940: Red Army units enter Lithuania, followed by Estonia and Latvia on June 17. The destiny of these countries was determined by the Secret Protocol of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.
