1917: Kyiv hosts the first All-Ukrainian Military Congress.

1920: The All-Ukrainian Orthodox Church Council proclaims the Ukrainian Church autocephalous.

1942: The Presidium of the Supreme Council of the USSR adopts a decree conferring the title “Hero of the Soviet Union” on Ukrainian partisan commanding officers Sydir Kovpak, Oleksandr Saburov, and Oleksii Fedorov.

1944: The deportation of the Crimean Tatars from the Crimean Peninsula to the USSR’s eastern regions begins (to be finally rehabilitated by a decree of the Supreme Council of the USSR in 1967).

2001: President Vladimir Voronin of Moldova pays an official visit to Ukraine. A number of bilateral agreements are signed.

2005: Kyiv hosts the opening ceremony of the 50th Eurovision International Song Competition involving contestants from 25 European countries (granted the privilege after the Ukrainian rock star Ruslana Lyzhychko’s spectacular victory).
