1918: The Council of People’s Commissars (Radnarkom) adopts a decree in Kyiv terminating the formation of registered “free” Cossacks.

1944: The Central Republican Botanical Gardens of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR are founded in Kyiv.
1952: The European Branch of the Taras Shevchenko Scientific Society opens.
1954: The 17th Congress of the Communist Party of Ukraine approves the recruitment of young Ukrainian men and women to be sent to Siberia and Kazakhstan to cultivate the virgin soils there.
