1802: Russian physicist Vasiliy Petrov repeats independently the discovery of the electric arc by Sir Humphry Davy in 1800.

1867: Elected magistrates are instituted.

1918: The Soviet of People’s Commissars of Soviet Russia adopts a decree on customs duties and institutions.

1922: The Soviet of People’s Commissars of the Ukrainian SSR adopts a decree on protection of green space in the cities and settlements of Ukraine. 1964: One of Ukraine’s largest 180-hectare botanical gardens opens in Kyiv.

1965: The Donetsk State University is founded (to receive the national status in 2000).

2001: The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine appoints Anatolii Kinakh, chairman of the Ukrainian Association of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, as Prime Minister of Ukraine.

2001: A monument to the prominent Ukrainian writer, Oles Honchar, is unveiled in Kyiv.

2001: A state-of-the-art runway starts functioning at Boryspil Airport.
