1630: Cossack detachments led by Taras Triasylo defeat Polish troops at Pereiaslav.

1957: The first Soviet ICBM R-7, designed by Sergei Korolyov, is launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome.

1990: The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine starts operating in a parliamentary mode.

1999: G-9 summit ends in Lviv after focusing on European security, economic and political contacts between the Central European countries, and Ukraine’s place in Europe.

2001: President Saparmurat Niyazov of Turkmenistan ends his visit to Ukraine after signing 10 bilateral instruments, including on trade and economic cooperation for 2001-10 and natural gas supplies to Ukraine in 2002-06.

2004: Istanbul hosts Eurovision’s final concert with Ukrainian rock singer Ruslana Lyzhychko placing first.
