1918: The Kuban Legislative Council proclaims an independent Kuban People’s Republic. Several days after the session a conference of the council members adopts a resolution on the incorporation of the Kuban Republic in Ukraine on a federal basis.

1920: The All-Ukrainian Revolutionary Committee is suspended while the Presidium of the All-Ukrainian Central Executive Committee resumes.

1929: The first Week of Ukrainian Literature begins in Moscow.

1943: Soviet troops liberate Kharkiv in the course of an operation named for the city.

1943: Soviet army men skilled in mountain climbing begin an unprecedented climb to the summit of Elbrus to remove the Nazi pennants and raise the national flag of the USSR. 1968: Yevhen Malaniuk, Ukrainian poet, philosopher, noted essayist, expert on culture, translator, and critic, dies in New York.

1994: Ukraine and Kazakhstan sign a communique on broader cooperation between their defense ministries in Almaty.
