1868: Ukraine’s first private commercial bank is established in Kyiv.

1917: The Third All-Ukrainian Military Congress is called to order in Kyiv. It adopts a historic resolution demanding that the Central Rada proclaim the Ukrainian republic’s national independence, full-scale Ukrainization of the Army and Navy, and the making of a peace treaty.

1923: The first issue of the literary and artistic journal Barykady teatru (Theater Barricades) comes off the presses in Kyiv.

1927: A juvenile labor commune starts functioning in the vicinity of Kharkiv under Anton Makarenko’s command.

1989: Uzhhorod hosts the first Intertheater international festival.

1995: The All-Ukrainian Orthodox Church Council of the Kyiv Patriarchate ordains Metropolitan Filaret Patriarch of the UOC-KP.

1999: The remains of Hetman Ivan Mazepa in an urn are transferred from Galati (Romania) to Odesa, 290 years after his death. The urn is transported to the historical preserve “Hetman Capital” in Baturyn, Chernihiv oblast.
