1918: The first issue of the underground newspaper Kyivsky komunist [The Kyiv Communist] comes off the presses under the auspices of the regional and city communist party committees.

1922: A Metal Aircraft Construction Commission is founded in the USSR (later to become known as the Tupolev Experimental Design Bureau).

1935: The Botanical Gardens of Kyiv are founded (currently known as the Botanical Gardens of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine).

1939: Red Army units enter Lviv.

1943: The Soviet Southeastern and South Fronts complete the Donbas offensive, clearing the territory of the Wehrmacht.

1955: The Soviet Union’s largest astrophysical observatory starts functioning in the vicinity of Bakhchisarai (Crimea).

1993: The Ministry of Justice of Ukraine registers the All-Ukrainian Association of Entrepreneurs.

1997: President Leonid Kuchma of Ukraine flies to the United States to attend the 52nd UN General Assembly.
