Day of Sorrow Marked At German Cemetery

28 November, 2000 - 00:00

“It is of high importance to at least once a year remind society about those who perished in the war and to honor their memory”, German Ambassador to Ukraine Dietmar St Я demann told The Day. On the Day of Sorrow the Sunday before last he, joined by his compatriots, took part in the ceremony of laying a wreath to the tomb of German soldiers who perished in World War II. The ceremony was held at a German cemetery near the village of Vita Poshtova in Kyiv oblast. After the ambassador spoke, Pastor Sachi said a prayer. Then the soldiers’ memory was honored by a moment of silence. Ambassador St Я demann emphasized in his interview with The Day, that it is of particular importance here, “where blood was shed on both sides. This day has to show that only peace, accord, and humanity, not violence can save us. Unfortunately, some politicians think that war is the only way to settle disputes.” Incidentally, the aforementioned cemetery was built by the German People’s Union for the Maintenance of Soldiers’ Burial Sites in close cooperation with Ukrainian representatives. Analogous cemeteries for Ukrainians who perished in World War II, under a bilateral agreement, have been set up on German territory, reports Andriy MURAVSKY.
