Where there is no law, but every man does what is right in his own eyes, there is the least of real liberty

Destroyer In the Role of Unifier?

23 October, 2001 - 00:00

Socialist Party Chairman Oleksandr Moroz has proposed to the leaders of other political parties and coalitions the creation of a single election bloc to change Ukraine’s political system into a democracy, says Interfax-Ukraine. According to the Socialist Party press service, Yury Kostenko (Ukrainian People’s Movement), Anatoly Matviyenko (Sobor), Viktor Pynzenyk (Reforms and Order), Petro Symonenko (Communist Party), Mykhailo Syrota (For Ukraine coalition), Yuliya Tymoshenko (Batkivshchyna), and Hennady Udovenko (People’s Movement of Ukraine) have been invited by Moroz to sign his Declaration of Unity. Calling for unity, Mr. Moroz emphasizes that joining forces is necessary in order to “bar parliamentary access to clans, to make Ukraine a truly democratic and law-governed state.” Judging by his proposal, Moroz considers the parties mentioned potential opposition forces, despite the fact that neither Rukh, nor Reforms and Order do consider themselves as such, especially if they join the Our Ukraine bloc.

In the opinion of Kyiv Center for Political Research Director Mykhailo Pohrebynsky, “Moroz knows only too well that the chances of the proposed coalition are zero. Faced with a serious problem how to clear the 4% hurdle, Moroz is after one goal — to get more publicity.”

Equally strange is the appeal by the Socialists leader to his would-be coalition members, urging them to put aside ideological differences in the name of replacing the system of power. First, because, being an experienced politician, Mr. Moroz must be aware of the unwritten law of politics — never unite with representatives of the enemy camp. Or perhaps he thinks that the ideological differences have given way to pragmatic considerations, Second, Moroz’s attempt to set up a coalition on the eve of the presidential elections and his active role in destroying it immediately spring to mind.
