“Donbas modern music art”

First festival of contemporary music in the eastern Ukraine opened in Donetsk

The festival is named after Witold Lutoslawski. The concert dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the composer will feature Little Suite, Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, Concerto for Orchestra, and Sparkling Tales. Donetsk Orchestra under the direction of Polish conductor Roman Rewakowicz with Joanna Fresher – solo and Beata Bilinska – piano will perform on the stage of the Donetsk Philharmonic Society.

Symphonic premieres will be presented on the stage of Donbass Opera, including the world premiere of Klavierkonzert (2000) amended for accordion and orchestra performed by Alexandra Karastoyanova-Hermentin from Austria. Yevhen Petrychenko will also perform on Donbas stage and will present to the audience Antithesis, Symphony No.3 for Soprano, Chorus and Symphony Orchestra on poems by Lina Kostenko. Symphony accompaniment provided by Symphony Orchestra of the Zaporizhia Oblast Philharmonic Society conducted by People’s Artist of Ukraine Viacheslav Red. Chamber Choir of Prokofiev Donetsk State Musical Academy led by Alla Stelmashenko.

The festival will be marked by world premieres: Volodymyr Stetsenko will first perform four solo songs for soprano and string orchestra, Kyrylo Fandieiev – Symphony Poem sAD, Roman Kachalov – concert overture, Anatoly Shukh – suite for orchestra The Voice Over the Sea for trumpet, harp, and strings, Olena Chysta – Quiet World, Danylo Milka – Chamber Symphony, etc. Sergey Prokofiev Symphony Orchestra conducted by Oleksandr Dolynsky will perform on the grand stage.

Night of modern opera and dance will be held in the hall of Donbass Opera on May 16. Musicians from Japan, Ukraine and Austria will play on the grand stage. The audience will see both students of Vadym Pysariev Choreography School and honored artists, dancers of Solovianenko Donetsk National Opera and Ballet Theater perform on the stage.

Solemn closing night of the festival will bring together culture of North and Central Eastern Europe with the culture of Japan. World and Europe premieres will be presented on the stage of Donetsk Philharmonic Society performed by musicians from Sweden, Finland, Japan, and Ukraine conducted by Masataka Matsuo from Japan.

Thirty-three authors from all over Ukraine participate in the composer’s competition. The main prize is performance of winning music composition on stage during the upcoming festivals.

“We hope that this and the next festivals can become a promo for Donetsk. After all, there is a great potential in this and good art foundation. This year we engaged everything we have in the city, all the best concert halls, the best music teams to show our guests that we have something different, something more beautiful than what has been said lately about Donetsk. We will change the concert facilities, conduct music nights in unusual places, organize open-air concerts, in order to show not only the greatness of the music, but also the greatness of nature,” said Yevhen PETRYCHENKO, founder of the festival and composer.
