On March 1, 2012, The Day carried the feature “Great problems coming from small batteries.” Inadequate legislation, the absence of collection and recycling procedures, lack of information about the damage to the environment, the absence of the sorting of waste have resulted in the Ukrainian dumps overflowing with terribly toxic waste that penetrates the soil and groundwater.
Owing to the Ekofan initiative and media efforts, the deadlock over one of the most pressing problems — collection and recycling of used batteries — has been broken in four cities (Kyiv, Donetsk, Lviv, and Kharkiv) in two weeks. Permanent collection points have started opening all over Ukraine, numbering over 50 in Kyiv alone.
The Day decided to support this initiative and organize a permanent collection point at the editorial office. Used batteries thus collected will be handed over to the activists of the national project Vivabat (an interview with Kyivite Ryta Oksiuta, the founder of the ecological initiative, will be carried shortly) and they will transfer them to Lviv’s Artem Works for recycling.
Remember: Each of us can make a great contribution to the formation of a better, more harmonious and cleaner environment for the current and future generations by simply paying closer attention to what s/he dumps.
